What is Classic Trial?
Classic Trial NZ is a unique form of circuit motorsport designed specifically for classic and historic cars. Instead of racing door-to-door, competitors focus on precision and consistency.
Each driver nominates a target lap time and then aims to repeat it as accurately as possible throughout a session. The winner is not the fastest car, but the driver who delivers the most consistent laps.
This format rewards smooth driving, mechanical sympathy, and concentration - making it ideal for classic vehicles and for drivers who want to enjoy circuit motorsport without the risks and costs that often come with hard racing.
Why Classic Trial?
-
Safe, non-contact circuit motorsport
-
An ideal entry point into track driving
-
Skill and consistency matter more than budget or horsepower
-
A welcoming paddock with a supportive culture
Whether you are new to the track or an experienced competitor, Classic Trial offers a rewarding and sustainable way to drive your car as it was meant to be driven.

2025/26 Season
The 2025/26 Classic Trial NZ season has just finished, with a wide and varied field of classic cars taking part. Check out the final results for the season here.
This season we were proud to be running as part of Thoroughbred and Classic Car Owners Club (TACCOC) events, with all meetings at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park.
Both TACCOC and Historic Racing Club (HRC) have been very supportive of our series over the years, and we are very grateful for their continued support.

Race Calendar
Running with TACCOC, we ran the series across 3 meets at Hampton Downs. No trip to Taupo this year, but will hopefully lock that in next season. Congratulations to the overall Season Champion - Graham Hunter - in his Suzuki Swift Gti.

Competitor Cars
One of the defining features of Classic Trial NZ is the diversity of cars on track. British and European classics sit alongside Japanese icons, American muscle, and club specials - all competing on equal footing through precision driving.
Below are just a few of the cars and competitors that make Classic Trial what it is.
Rex
Mk1 Ford Escort Mexico
The Ford Escort Mk1 is a familiar sight in Classic Trial, and for good reason. Lightweight, predictable, and mechanically simple, Escorts reward smooth inputs and consistent driving - exactly what the format demands.
Well-prepared but not extreme, these cars highlight how Classic Trial allows competitors to enjoy iconic classics on track without the escalation that often comes with racing.
Iain
Mazda RX-2 PP
A standout Japanese classic in the field, the Mazda RX-2 brings rotary smoothness and period style to Classic Trial.
Although housing an peripheral port race engine, rather than chasing outright lap times, the car is set up for balance, predictability, and repeatability - qualities that suit the time-consistency format perfectly.
John
BMW 2002 ti
John’s BMW 2002ti is a perfect example of a classic built around balance and driver engagement. Light, responsive, and beautifully proportioned, the 2002ti rewards smooth steering inputs and consistent corner speeds.
In Classic Trial, the car’s communicative chassis and linear performance make it a natural fit. It’s a reminder of why the 2002 earned its reputation as one of BMW’s great driver-focused classics - and why it continues to shine in precision-based motorsport.
Tony
Ford Mustang
Tony’s V8 Ford Mustang brings unmistakable presence and sound to the Classic Trial grid. While the car has some serious torque on tap, success in Classic Trial comes from restraint, rhythm, and smooth inputs rather than acceleration alone.
Driven with discipline, the Mustang shows that larger-engined classics can be just as competitive as lighter cars when the focus is on braking points, throttle modulation, and repeatable lap times.
Penelope
BMW 318i
Penelope competes in Classic Trial NZ in her BMW 318i, a well-balanced modern classic that suits the time-consistency format perfectly.
With predictable handling, strong braking, and smooth power delivery, the 318i allows the driver to focus on rhythm and accuracy rather than outright pace. Her car also highlights an important part of Classic Trials’ appeal - later-era classics (25+ years old) can compete comfortably alongside older machinery in a safe, friendly environment.
Dave
Toyota Celica
The Toyota Celica represents the newer end of the Classic Trial spectrum and shows that more recent classics can compete just as comfortably as older cars.
Known for its reliability and composure, the Celica allows drivers to focus on accuracy and repeatability rather than mechanical concerns. In a time-consistency format, that dependability translates directly into strong, consistent results.

We work with a small number of partners to support the ongoing development of the championship.
